Rincón de la Vieja hike

For many years, the southern sector of this area was a cattle farm, until in 1973 it was included as part of the Rincon de la Vieja National Park. It is a site of great biological interest, of high scenic beauty, composed of volcanic manifestations and natural and cultural elements. It contains an important extension of primary forest, similar to that of the central area, where today coffee is grown. And as for the fauna this sector is popular for the presence of jaguars, danta (Tapir), wild pigs and monkeys (white faced and spider).

Activity
Once in the Santa María sector you can enjoy:
La Casona Santa María: Restored in March 1997, together with the Casona of Santa Rosa, it’s one of the most faithful witnesses of Guanacaste´s cattle culture.
The life of this old adobe house revolved around dual-purpose livestock activities (meat and dairy production), coffee crops, sugarcane and for some time it was also used as a wood sawmill.
Colibri Trail: A 500-meter path through an old “trapiche” (where sugarcane was processed) that will take you to the volcanic thermal river with hotsprings.
(Catarata Bosque Encantado) Enchanted Forest Waterfall: It is a small but beautiful waterfall of cold, fresh water. The perfect place to sit and listen to the sounds of nature and appreciate the beauty of this forest, really charming.
(Pailas de agua fría) Cold Water Pailas: Located at the foot of the Humid Forest, this is another of the fascinating volcanic manifestations of Rincon de la Vieja.
Total distance: 1 km linear (2 km round trip)
Hot springs: approximately 3km from the Casona Santa María, walking along a beautiful path in the forest, you will reach the hot springs next to a cold-water.
Itinerary
After a 30 minutes hike in the tropical forest we reach the cold waters of two waterfalls: Bosque Encantado and Morpho. The trail then continues for about half an hour after which we will reach and enjoy the warm hot springs.
